Are gender roles changing?

In past decades men were always expected to carry themselves a certain way, like certain things and be a certain way. They were expected to be aggressive, like sports and take care of their family and things of that nature. Women were expected to know how to cook, take care of their children and husband.  With the turn of the century, it seems like societal norms are constantly changing, especially in the aspect of gender roles. Now more women are holding “so called” masculine jobs like CEO of companies and owning their own businesses, things that were thought to be only for men. More and more men on the other hand are doing “so called” feminine jobs like becoming nurses. Today more and more men are becoming house husbands and staying home and taking care of the household responsibilities, while the woman are the ones who are working and bringing home the paychecks. It was inevitable that women would begin to show that they can perform the many tasks that men do and at times even exceed expectations. For many years women have been fighting for equality and the opportunity to show that they are just as capable as men and things are starting to change in gender roles. Colleges now have more women than men and the percentage of women graduating and receiving degrees is growing higher than men every year.

Even though women and men are still not equal in many aspects, but women have shown that they are just as capable as men and they continue to fight for equality.

The affect black Friday has on consumer behavior

Black Friday is slowly becoming a national holiday and is a day many consumers circle on their calendars. Many people plan months ahead for black Friday and put as much money aside just for that one day or now a full weekend of shopping. Black Friday has so much influence on us now that people will rather bypass thanksgiving dinner just to be in front of a line when stores open. Black Friday has a lot of positive aspects to it. It allows consumers to buy products that they would probably not be able to afford during other times of the year. It also provides a positive boost on the economy because consumers are spending so much. But then the question arises, is Black Friday worth all the hype? Whether or not black Friday has the best deals, all the advertisements for it have the consumers fixed on the expectations that they will get bargain prices on black Friday.

Black Friday can also have negative aspects to it, like huge crowds of people, not enough security or not enough products. Over the years stores have gotten better in organization, but it still doesn’t fix the problem of certain people being unhappy and causing trouble. Many violent actions have happened throughout the years and cause certain people to stay away from stores on black Friday. It makes you wonder why do people’s behavior changes so quickly, is it because they are blinded by material things and the need to have certain products. Black Friday is going to continue to grow and be a big part of our nation and I just hope we keep finding ways to improve it.

The affect of peer pressure on consumer behavior

Peer pressure plays a major role on the way people go about their lives. Peer pressure is the pressure a person feels to behave in accordance with group expectations. Peer pressure is usually associated with teenagers and how they try to do things or act in ways that will be accepted by their peers. Peer pressure also occurs to adults, but is less about age and more about status. Peer pressure affects all ages and all types of people. Everybody whether they like to admit it or not are concerned with what people think and how they are portrayed. Peer pressure can also play a role on consumer behavior, even though many of us believe that our environment has no influence on us in terms of consumer behavior. In fact, our environment is a major factor when we are making decisions on what to buy. Many times people can be influenced by what is popular in society, expected of them because of their job title and what their friends or neighbors have. I can remember when I was in high school that people went with what was popular, for example it seemed like everybody in my high school had a sidekick which was a phone that used instant messaging to talk to people. Peer pressure also occurs among doctors, it seems like once you’re a doctor you must drive an expensive car. Peer pressure affects all aspects of life, but it has its most impact on consumer behavior.

How gas rationing affects consumer behavior

America has not seen a hurricane this devastating since hurricane Katrina in 2004. Hurricane Sandy affected so many lives. So many people lost property and had their lives changed, but almost everybody in the tristate area is affected due to gas shortages. We have not seen gas shortages this bad since the last major gas shortage in 1973 where gas was eventually rationed like it is currently today. People are greatly affected by the gas shortages because many americans cannot find gas to drive to work and do their daily activities. This gas rationing is implemented to make finding gas a little easier for americans, but for most americans it just brings up the question, how long will this gas shortage last? People are saying a couple more days and others are saying a couple of more weeks. For now many consumers will shape the way they drive and that means going out to restaurants, going to the mall or places that are not priorities. Many businesses will be affected by this gas shortage because people will not drive unless its for essentials needs, like for work, school or emergencies. I know for myself it has impacted my lifestyle a great deal because since the hurricane I have only been using my car for just going to work and school. I would usually go out during the weekends, but currently I just stay home during the weekends because I an afraid if use up my gas, I may not find any to fill up my tank again. People are adjusting the way they go about their daily lives due to this gas shortage and while it last businesses will suffer a little because consumers will not be so quick to jump in their cars and go out to stores and other places that rely on consumers.

Can Advertising affect consumer behavior?

Advertisements have a great deal of affect on consumer behavior; this is true because it happened to me the other night. KFC has a new meal and every time I am watching TV they are advertising it; so the other night I drove by a KFC (not intending to eat KFC), stopped my car and went in to buy their new meal. Advertising can make consumers do things they never planned on doing because they are exposed to something so often it can affect the way they behave.
Consumer motivation can also affect consumer behavior. Motivations are the driving forces behind human action as consumers are driven to address real needs. In my case, I was hungry and exposed to the KFC advertisement so much that it affected my decision on what I wanted to eat.
Along with motivation, you have to distinctions, utilitarian and hedonic. Utilitarian motivation involves a desire to acquire products that can be used to accomplish something and hedonic motivation involves a desire to experience something gratifying. In my case again, both utilitarian and hedonic motivation can be applied to my situation. Acquiring the meal from KFC accomplished the goal of filling up my stomach and it also gave me a gratifying feeling because I wanted to experience the new meal from KFC.
I do believe that advertisement plays a major role on how consumer’s behavior and the way advertising is becoming such a huge aspect of our world; it will only continue to influence consumer behavior even more.
